Avengers: Infinity War is one of the rare superhero movies structured around the villain's journey rather than the heroes' victory.
Thanos begins
the film with one Infinity Stone and spends the next two and a half hours
crossing the universe to collect the remaining five. Every heroic storyline -
Thor's grief, Tony Stark's fear, Doctor Strange's strategy, Vision and Wanda's
romance, Peter Quill's anger, and Steve Rogers' refusal to trade lives -

The result is
deliberately uncomfortable. The heroes make brave choices, but several of them
are emotionally incapable of making the choice required at the exact moment it
matters. Gamora cannot let Nebula be tortured. Quill cannot control his grief.
Wanda waits too long to destroy the Mind Stone. Thor chooses revenge over
certainty.
Thanos,
meanwhile, treats sacrifice as proof of conviction. That does not make him

Thanos Attacks the Asgardian Refugee Ship
Infinity War
opens moments after the survivors of Thor: Ragnarok have escaped Asgard's
destruction.
Their refugee
ship has been intercepted by Thanos and the Black Order.
The opening
immediately establishes a different power scale. Thor has just survived the end
of his homeworld, yet Thanos' forces overwhelm the surviving Asgardians with
terrifying ease.
Loki Dies and Hulk Is Defeated
Hulk charges
Thanos and initially lands several heavy blows.
Thanos then
dismantles him in close combat without using the Infinity Stones.
The scene is

Thanos also claims
to love Gamora, but he turns that love into sacrifice.
The film's
darkest idea is not that love makes the heroes weak.
It is that love
creates obligations, and Thanos wins because he treats every obligation except

Post-Credits Scene Explained
After the Snap,
Nick Fury and Maria Hill witness the chaos spreading through a city.
Hill
disintegrates first.
Fury begins
disappearing as well, but manages to activate a modified pager before turning
to dust.
The pager lands
on the ground and displays Captain Marvel's symbol.
The scene sets
up Carol Danvers as a powerful off-world ally who may be able to help the

Avengers:
