Above & Below begins like a sun-soaked vacation thriller and then traps its characters between two kinds of predators.
Below the
surface are Great White sharks, indifferent to money, loyalty or fear. Above
the surface is Burns, a cartel boss who believes every person, debt and danger
can be controlled if the price is high enough.
Tatiana enters
the movie as one member of a group of friends on a Mexican vacation. By the
end, she becomes the only person capable of seeing the survival problem
clearly: she does not need to defeat both threats. She needs to make them
collide.
That is the
hidden structure behind Jesse V. Johnson's shark-crime hybrid. The ocean is

Kyle's Gambling Debt Starts the Nightmare
The vacation
begins with a bad decision that seems small compared with what follows.
Kyle, Tatiana's
brother, is playing poker against a wealthy and mysterious man named Burns.
Kyle is confident until Burns reveals a winning hand and leaves him deeper in
trouble.
Burns does not
immediately threaten him. Instead, he offers something that looks generous: an
unforgettable shark-diving excursion for Kyle and his friends.
The offer is
the first warning. Burns does not solve problems by shouting. He makes other
people walk willingly into the place where he already controls the rules.
Burns Offers the Group a Shark-Diving Trip
Kyle accepts
the trip, seeing it as a lucky break rather than a trap.
Tatiana joins
him along with Kayle, Danny and TJ. The group expects partying, open water and
a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
Burns frames
the trip as a gift, but the movie gradually reveals that his generosity is
connected to a larger drug-smuggling operation.
The vacation is
therefore compromised before anyone even reaches the boat.
The Friends Board the Afrikat
The group
boards a vessel called the Afrikat and meets Captain Logan.
Two men, Martin
and Garrison, also arrive carrying suspicious bags. Their presence makes the
private excursion feel less private, but Logan reassures the group.
The men go into
the shark cage first and return without disaster.
That normal
first dive is important because it lowers everyone's guard before Tatiana and
Kayle enter the water.
Tatiana and Kayle Enter the Shark Cage
Tatiana and her
best friend Kayle are lowered beneath the surface in the metal cage.
The sequence
begins as controlled danger: the sharks are frightening, but the cage, oxygen
tanks and boat crew create the impression that humans still control the experience.

safety collapses almost immediately once violence erupts above them.

forward, the cage changes meaning. It stops being protection from sharks and

Danny Finds the Cocaine
On deck, Danny
reaches into the wrong bag and discovers a large quantity of drugs.

exposes the hidden purpose of the trip.
Martin reacts
violently because the group has now seen something they were never supposed to

discovery is the moment the movie switches genres. What looked like a shark
excursion becomes a hostage situation.

The deeper the
women remain underwater, the more dangerous time becomes.
Their oxygen is
limited, Kayle is hurt and panic would waste the air even faster.

Burns sends
armed divers into the water to control the recovery and eliminate resistance.
Tatiana uses

Blood in the
water draws the sharks toward the pursuing criminals, while the women use
underwater rock formations and their greater familiarity with the dive area to
stay alive.
The sequence
reverses the film's threat structure. The animals that trapped Tatiana now

Tatiana and Kayle Reach the Surface
After surviving
the underwater pursuit, Tatiana and Kayle make it back toward the surface.
Their problem
is not over.
Burns is still
alive, armed and in control of the vessel.
The movie moves
from open-water horror into a more intimate action-thriller climax.

After Burns and
most of the immediate threats are gone, Tatiana and Kayle manage to get the
boat moving toward the Mexican coast.
The ending is
restrained rather than triumphant.
They have
survived, but friends are dead and the vacation that was supposed to be a final
celebration has become a permanent trauma.
The ocean at
sunrise does not suddenly become peaceful. It simply becomes survivable.

movie's final distinction: survival is not the same as returning to who you

Below is not a complicated movie, but its best idea is stronger than the
premise first suggests.
The shark
sequences create claustrophobic survival tension, while Antonio Banderas turns
Burns into the more memorable predator by playing him as a man who almost never
doubts his own authority.
Laura Marano
gives Tatiana the right kind of transformation. She does not become fearless.
She becomes useful while afraid.
The film does
not reinvent shark cinema, and some critics have fairly pointed out that the
crime plot overwhelms the creature-feature side.
But that
imbalance also gives the movie its identity.
The sharks are
dangerous because they are impossible to reason with.
Burns is
dangerous because he can reason - and assumes everyone else eventually will
reason exactly the way he wants.
Tatiana
survives by proving him wrong.
